Raggedstar's stomach growled like the rumble of a freight engine. There was hardly anything in the prey pile, nothing more than a squirrel and he wasn't going to take it. The queens and the elders needed it, but even that likely wasn't enough for all of them. The massive tom's ears pricked as he observed the camp. All of his warriors were looking so thin and malnourished. This isn't right, where could all the prey be? Days and days went by with his warriors giving reports that there was hardly anything to be found out in the forest. It was like all the prey had suddenly vanished.
When they did bring back food it was usually given to the weakest cats, as the warrior code said. "Mousedung," he cursed under his breath. He knew if he didn't do something about it, his entire Clan could wither away right before his eyes. He wasn't about to let that happen to him. "Let all cats old enough to climb the trees gather to hear my words!" he called.

Redstep stalked back into camp, his hang hanging low with empty jaws. The past few days he had both lead patrols and gone out alone non-stop to search for prey. His paws ached from the constant hunting through the forests with nothing to show for it. His ribs shown through his ruffled ginger fur. Redstep felt as though all his energy was drained away as his stomach growled much to his embarrassment. Even the Queens were looking thin.
"Let all cats old enough to climb the trees gather to hear my words!"
Redstep pricked his ears when he heard his leader call and moved to take his place as he was clan deputy. Worry showed through his amber eyes. If the Queens and elders were looking thin, then the warriors were going to waste away into nothing. His own apprentice looked starved and she was so young. Redstep looked to his leader, guessing the meeting was about this sudden lack of prey.

Darkstorm could hear his belly growling. He hadn't left the Raiders just to starve among the Clan cats. He heard the leader call a meeting and wondered if it had anything to do with them being fed. If there was one thing the Clan needed, it was a better food supply. "Maybe we'll take over some lousy Clan's territory," he grumbled to himself. He'd heard whispers about the war that NorthClan and EastClan had. Maybe if EastClan were weak, SouthClan could take more of their territory. After all, the two clans were enemies.
He sat himself down in front of the meetingplace, looking up at his leader. He yawned and stretched a little. His stomach just grumbled again.

The leader of SouthClan watched the warriors gather around as he twitched his tail back and forth. The fearsome dark brown tabby tom acknowledged his deputy with the dip of his head. He also cautiously eyed Darkstorm, the former raider, untrusted by most of the cats in the Clan. He hadn't done too much to make trouble but he was still reckless and had a hard time making decisions like a true-blooded warrior would.
"Cats of SouthClan," he rumbled. "Prey is scarce and our bellies our empty. If we're to survive, we need to step up our game. I want my most stealthy warriors to hunt for prey... Outside our territory. If you hunt in the territories of other Clans, don't risk confrontation. At the first sign of attack, take the prey and run."

Leafpaw felt like StarClan themselves were lifting her white paws over the thick forest litter towards SouthClan camp and holding her head high, despite the weight in her jaws and the weakness in her muscles.
She had come with food.
Granted, the adolescent rabbit was dead when she found it, and on the verge of being inedible. Nor was there really enough good meat on its skinny, emaciated body to fill the smallest stomach. But food was food right? And this was the first prey Leafpaw had found in nearly two days. She prided herself in her ability to resist the temptation to take just a scrap for her own growling belly. Ever since her mishap with WestClan, Leafpaw had been more careful than ever to abide by the rules. She had a lot to prove, and a Warrior name to earn, so she was on her best behavior!
She entered the camp just in time to hear Raggedstar’s announcement. Blue eyes brightening, she trotted closer while angling herself toward the fresh-kill pile.
“I want my most stealthy warriors to hunt for prey... Outside our territory.”
The prey fell from her jaws with a loud thump. Confused, unsure if she heard right, Leafpaw glanced at the other assembled cats. She met her mentor Redstep’s eyes. Was this… for real? She supposed it would explain why the she and Redstep had managed to get out of trouble with WestClan virtually unscathed.
But WestClan certainly hadn’t been happy about one apprentice mistake. What would happen when stealing prey had become habit? How long could they get away with trespassing?
“All territories?” she croaked, knowing the question was stupid but feeling an urge to say something. The apprentice didn’t question the order itself; SouthClan was withering away under famine and the prey was absolutely essential to their survival. “Will you be requesting for more territory at the Gathering?”

Whitemoon rushed when he heard the announcement. He had been out hunting but he had nothing to show for it. He was much thinner than he even usually was, and his pelt seemed to cling directly to his bones. He padded up next to the others, looking back and forth. He sat down to listen to what Raggedstar was saying, and he was surprised to hear that they were all now allowed to hunt in other clans' territories. He looked around to see the varied reactions of the SouthClan cats. Some of them seemed shocked, and others didn't. But they all knew that sooner or later something had to be done about the famine, and this was it.

Redstep nodded his full approval to his leaders plan. Southclan was barren. Nothing remained and the clan was starving. This was the only way.
"Westclan and Eastclan are the closest territories to us. Would you like me to take a patrol to one of them?" He meowed to Raggedstar. Redstep gave his apprentice a disproving look as she spoke out. He sighed knowing she would of said something anyways, she always did. Although this time she did bring up a good point. Will he request more territory? Surly the other clans wouldn't condemn them to starve.
Leafpaw still seemed so young to him, although she was just about ready to receive her warrior name. Maybe along with her name she'd learn to think before she spoke. But probably not. Redstep noticed Whitemoon making his way into the camp, his jaws empty. Redstep gave the warrior a nod of acknowledgement. The sooner they set out to hunt the better.

Raggedstar looked down at the apprentice who asked a question. A low rumble rose from his throat but it was just typical Raggedstar making growling noises to seem tough to the younger cats of the Clan. "All territories," he meowed. "Whatever prey you can get your claws into, this is for the good of the Clan. If we don't get food, and quickly, we'll all starve to death." That wasn't going to happen on his watch. There was no way Raggedstar would let his Clan fall into that disarray.
He looked at his deputy and nodded. "Yes, Redstep, take a patrol immediately," he meowed. "Make sure you only choose the warriors you know who can handle this mission. It's important that they be stealthy and know when to avoid a conflict, so make sure they're level-headed." He finished his order with another curt nod.

Leafpaw felt excitement crawl along her spine at the prospect of this new announcement. The fresh-kill and her hunger were temporarily forgotten as newfound energy filled her limbs. The apprentice hopped a little in place, ears perked and frosty eyes sparkled.
She sprinted over to her mentor and excitedly looked up at him, her tortoiseshell tailed curled high. She had missed Redstep’s earlier critical looks. Redstep always seemed exasperated with her, anyway. “Where will you be taking us, Redstep?” Leafpaw chattered faster than a squirrel scaled a SouthClan tree. “EastClan? Will we go back to WestClan?” The apprentice paused, thinking, before plunging back into her outburst; “What do you think WestClan would do if they caught the two of us again? How mad do you think they’d be?”

Redstep nodded slightly. "Yes Raggedstar, We will leave immediately. " Before he had a change to seek out the warriors he wanted to take, his apprentice hopped up. Nosy and excited as always. Redstep sighed to himself as she chattered away like a squirrel in leaf-fall.
"Leafpaw I want you to stay here. I'll only be taking warriors." His voice was stern, he knew he couldn't take her. "I want you to clean out the nursery and the elders den while I'm away." She would probably be furious with him, but Leafpaw just didn't listen. If she wanted her warrior name it was time she stopped acting like a kit. Without another word Redstep turned his back on her so he could hopefully avoid an argument.
"Whitemoon. Darkstorm. I would like it if both of you would accompany me into Westclan. If the rumors of the war are true, Northclan will be swarming Eastclan's territory." The moment both warriors agreed to go, they would be off. Soon Southclan will have full stomachs again.

Raggedstar watched as his deputy organized the patrol, taking along Darkstorm and Whitemoon. He somewhat doubted the choices internally, but he wanted to let Redstep have a chance at it. Whitemoon was known for being haughty and Darkstorm's loyalties could easily be questioned, though they were both very skilled warriors. Maybe their experience could balance out their personalities. He just hoped that they wouldn't invite any trouble.
The last thing he wanted was for SouthClan to be caught trespassing on another Clan's territory. He didn't want a war, he just wanted his Clan to be fed, at all costs. There was nothing else they could do except take the prey, and hope that no cat would stand in their way.

Lightningfall watched silently as Redstep called the patrol to him, feeling her heart drop. I know I'm not the best hunter in the clan, but they could at least try to include me, she thought ruefully. She slowly turned her bright yellow gaze away, telling herself that it didn't matter. She noticed Raggedstar staring down at them with watchful eyes and wondered what he was thinking. She began to imagine what it was like to be leader. Probably really hard, she thought. With all those decisions to make. But somewhere in the back of her mind she knew that she would want to be leader on day.
Fresh new leaf air wafted around the camp, bringing the scent of new growth, but Lightningfall knew that out in the forest there was little prey. My clanmates are starving, she thought. Suddenly her belly growled. Not to mention me. Bright sunlight shone all around her, making her pelt glisten. "Well," she mewed out loud. "Might as well give myself a good washing." Twisting around, she carefully began to clean her black fur in long, thorough strokes.
