Sunstripe knew that it was usually a good thing when young apprentices got their names, but there was such a tension in the camp after the announcement of war that it seemed to put pressure on the ceremony. This was the first time he had ever witnessed the warrior ceremony of another Clan, and was mildly surprised to find that it was exactly like EastClan's ceremony.
Poisonpaw and Freezepaw looked excited to be warriors, but Sunstripe knew that it just meant that he would have to fight against the both of them in the upcoming battle, that was if he got out of the camp alive. He was still concerned about what Scatterstar had planned for him. |

He waited until they had both finished saying their oaths to continue. He first turned to Freezepaw, because she had answered before Poisonpaw. He kept his intense, blue gaze fixed on her as he spoke. "Then by the powers of StarClan, I give you your warrior names. Freezepaw, from this moment you will be known as Freezecloud. StarClan honors your bravery and cunning, and we welcome you as a full warrior of NorthClan."
Next, Scatterstar turned to Poisonpaw. He couldn't help but notice how nervous both apprentices had been looking the entire time. It was perfectly normal, but he hoped this sort of behavior would not carry in to their warrior days. "Poisonpaw, from this moment you will be known as Poisonthorn. StarClan honors your loyalty and courage, and we welcome you as a full warrior of NorthClan."
He then turned away from the both of them and faced Sunstripe, with his eyes narrowed. "As new warriors, your first act will be to drive this trespassing fool out of NorthClan territory. Let him tell EastClan about the dangers that are coming to them, and give him some wounds to think about," he ordered.

Freezecloud leaped forward first, raking her claws down Sunstripe's back, only just grazing his fur. She didn't break the skin, but it was enough to make him start. "Run!" she hissed in his ear. She chased him through the camp entrance, nipping at his heels. From a distance, any cat would think she was actually attacking him. She swiped a paw at his back knees, making him stumble. Freezecloud knew Poisonthorn would be right on her heels. She allowed herself a glance behind her. Poisonthorn was no more than a tail-length away. She quickened her pace until she was right next to Sunstripe. "Go!" she cried. "Save your Clan!" She snapped at his face, before rearing up and striking at his ears. It was the first blow she actually delivered.
Freezecloud began to hang back, allowing Sunstripe to gain some distance. The territory was strange to him, and finding a way over the rocky footing was no doubt taking its toll in his paws. She dashed around to Sunstripe's other side, directing him toward a softer route. They began to run down a hill, and were quickly approaching the EastClan border. She was side-by-side with Poisonthorn now, his black coat a sharp contrast to her white body. Freezecloud yowled, and leaped one final time at Sunstripe. She dragged her claws across his hindquarters. She battered his hips, enough to draw blood. She only hoped he could make it home in time to bring his Clan to safety.

Owlflight's fur was standing on end as she watched Freezecloud and Poisonthorn chase after Sunstripe snarling. She hadn't the chance to welcome her clanmates as full warriors of NorthClan and their first task was to attack and drive out the EastClan cat.
This is what Scatterstar wants?! To give apprentices their warrior names and order them to wound moments later? Owlflight's claws scored the earth. The new warriors should have prepared themselves for their silent vigil, an important clan tradition. StarClan will not allow this!
But even the vigil was the last thing on Owlflight's mind. He wants more warriors for his war with EastClan!! Owlflight thought. An unnecessary war! She rose up from her frozen position and started to approach Scatterstar.
"Scatterstar, NorthClan has no quarrel with EastClan." Owlflight meowed nervously. "Why lead the Clan into an unnecessary war?" Owlflight knew what she was doing; she was challenging her leader's word, which according to the warrior code, was law.

Poisonthorn was surprised when just moments after he was given his name, he was sent to do something by the leader. He nodded and turned to the EastClan warrior. Freezecloud took the lead in driving him out, but Poisonthorn was right behind her. He barely got in a scratch or two, though, which made him almost seem inferior.
For a moment, he thought he heard Freezecloud speak to the warrior, saying something along the lines of, "Go save your Clan." He paused for a moment and blinked. Is Freezecloud a traitor? he thought to himself. Once Sunstripe was sent running, he returned to the camp.
Owlflight was speaking up about the war, something that Poisonthorn knew Scatterstar wouldn't take lightly. He liked it when all of his warriors agreed with him, and going against his word was something that would only serve to infuriate him. "Watch out, Owlflight," he grumbled under his breath. You're angering a nest of hornets!

Sunstripe took off towards EastClan, suffering from mild stinging wounds, but nothing near as terrible as what he had expected to happen to him. It seemed that Freezecloud had taken pity on him. While that was a bit of a wound to his pride, he was grateful that he had escaped NorthClan territory alive.
Ripplestar must know about this. EastClan is in a lot of danger, he thought. He knew that Shatterstar wanted to bring down fear on EastClan before he attacked, but there was no way around telling his Clan about the coming threat. |

Scatterstar watched with stoic interest as the EastClan warrior was driven off of NorthClan territory by the two new warriors. He hoped that they would have given him a few more injuries, but he supposed what they did would have to suffice. Either way, he wanted to strike fear into the hearts of the EastClan cats before he sent his Clan to attack.
His ears flicked as he heard Owlflight's complaint. Though inwardly, he knew he wasn't going to back down, outwardly he would have to make it seem like he was listening to her. "Who's to say this war is unnecessary? EastClan has crossed our borders, and our Clan could use territory from down in the lowlands where prey is plentiful." He blinked, trying to hide his internal anger at the fact that one of his warriors had dared to question his word.
"We attack at dawn tomorrow," he snarled to the Clan. "There will be no further objections, I trust. If any cat isn't with us, then they are against us." He would not go easy on any traitors or deserters in his Clan. He looked towards the southeast, narrowing his blue eyes. It's only a matter of time until EastClan falls...

Owlflight flattened her ears against her head and said no more. She traced Scatterstar's gaze towards EastClan's territory. This war can't happen! She thought desperately. Sure prey is scarce. But it's almost bare-leaf! The prey will come back in new-leaf.
Scatterstar's words hummed in her ears: "If any cat isn't with us, then they are against us." If Owlflight didn't fight this battle, Scatterstar would think she is disloyal. I am loyal to my clan! Owlflight glanced at her classmates, wondering if they were thinking the same as her.
Oh StarClan, what happens now? Do I have to prove my loyalty with tooth and claw?
She gave one last look at Scatterstar. The ferocity in his blue eyes were clear and there was no changing his mind.

Poisonthorn was surprised that the attack was going to be so soon. He wondered if he and Frostcloud would even have time to go to the Standing Stones in order to sit vigil. The issue with Owlflight seemed to still be hanging in the air, even though Scatterstar had chosen to all but completely dismiss her complaints. Poisonthorn could see that she was distressed, but there was no going against Scatterstar.
Walking up to Freezecloud, Poisonthorn had a concerned look in his eyes. "What do you think about all of this?" he asked her. "Do you think we'll be able to go for our vigil? What if StarClan rejects us because we don't get there because of a battle?" He didn't want to be stripped of his rank and name in front of his Clan.

Freezecloud looked sadly up at Poisonthorn, somewhat surprised that keeping his warrior name was more important than the turmoil about to unfold. "StarClan has been silent for a long time," she whispered. "Not to mentioned that we're going into battle to serve our Clan. We mean no disrespect, and I believe they will acknowledge that. Besides, a leader's word is law, and Scatterstar has ordered us to fight." Freezepaw closed her eyes and sighed, before stretching them back open. "In fact, I hope we don't have to stay up all night--we have a battle at dawn tomorrow, and I haven't slept in two days. I need all the rest I can get."
Freezecloud shook her head. She hoped Scatterstar would understand the situation, or even take pity on the two new warriors. If I have to sit up all night, I don't know how I'm going to make it through the battle alive, she thought. Surely he wants a fight to the death. Freezecloud looked up at Poinothorn again, and said, "I suppose we should ask him." she quickly realized her mistake. Fatigue was starting to affect her thoughts. "Scatterstar, I mean."

Owlflight fluffed her fur against the cold of the approaching bare-leaf. She flicked her ears towards the newly named, and now fretting, warriors. "StarClan help us" she muttered as she made her way towards the warrior den. Might as well get some rest she thought. As reluctant as she was, Owlflight knew she would be going into battle. But this isn't right!
She padded up to Freezecloud and Poisonthorn. "Congratulations", she mewed. "Though i'm not sure whether you will be keeping vigil or not." Keeping a silent vigil was an important tradition but Scatterstar's impending war with EastClan was not helpful. Both warriors looked dead on their paws.

Poisonthorn had noticed that StarClan hadn't been responding to the Clans, which put him in a sense of even more dread. If he were to be killed in battle, would his ancestors be there to accept him? He swallowed. Even if they did travel to the Standing Stones for vigil, there wasn't any certainty that it would matter since StarClan wasn't around to accept them as warriors anyway.
He nodded in agreement, though. Scatterstar was still standing nearby, though he seemed somewhat preoccupied. Before they could go to ask him about their vigil, Owlflight stopped by. "Thanks for the congratulations," he said. She didn't seem sure about their vigil either, though.

The deputy of NorthClan, Blackstorm, was deeply excited by the fact that there was going to be a battle... maybe even as much as Scatterstar himself. He prowled up towards the leader with an excited glint in his amber eyes. "The decision to go to war with EastClan was a truly enlightened one," he purred. "I can hardly wait to sink my claws into the flesh of an EastClan cat. They've had it too good for too long." He looked around, noticing that the rest of the clan seemed to be in confusion and concern over it.
"Forget about what they say about it," he added. "What do the common warriors know? You're the most brilliant tactician this Clan has had in a long time. Your legacy might even trump that of Jaggedstar!" Blackstorm never resisted the chance to suck-up to the leader, in hopes that it would gain him favor.

Scatterstar was confident that he would not be bothered with trivial complaints from warriors any longer. He turned away from them coldly, still looking with malice towards the south-eastern lands. He spent a few moments in deep thought, trying to drown out the voices of the conversing warriors nearby, until Blackstorm came along. He gave a bored look to his deputy.
He's trying to impress me again, he thought with a sigh. It's not like he can even advance in rank any further unless I were dead. Moron. He offered a slight grin towards the deputy in acknowledgement, listening to him drone on. "I wouldn't let the opinions of any warrior sway me," he murmured. "I am set on going to war with EastClan, and that's how it's going to be."
His ears flicked when Blackstorm mentioned Jaggedstar. He felt as though his Clan still sat in the shadows of Jaggedstar's troubled yet victorious reign. He even felt as though he couldn't fell the paw-steps that the old leader had left. Pebblestar had tried to clear NorthClan's name, but Scatterstar wanted their reputation to remain powerful and dangerous. "Make sure that all the warriors know to prepare for battle," he growled to his deputy.

Freezecloud tiredly stumbled over to Scatterstar, and interrupted his conversation with Blackstorm by poking him with her paw. "Scatterstar," she asked. "Do Poisonthorn and I have to go to the standing stones and sit vigil, or may we rest for the battle tomorrow?" He didn't seem interested in what Blackstorm was saying to him. He's probably sucking up to Scatterstar again, Freezepaw grumbled inwardly. Her growing fatigue was making her increasingly petulant. She wondered sometimes why Scatterstar had chosen Blackstorm as deputy. Regardless, all she card about at that moment was whether or not she could rest for the upcoming battle against a Clan which she had just run away from.
