Koschei heard a voice that was unmistakably Jagger's as he approached the camp, calling his name. He cringed ever so slightly. He could see in the distance that the calico had a group surrounding him. This could only be bad news for Koschei. He grumbled to himself and wandered over, trying to keep a stoic face. "What is it, Captain Jagger?" he asked, the slightest hint of exasperation escaping through his voice.
He saw the other cats with various expressions on their face, and Amelia looking somewhat amused (in the way that Amelia looked amused, for she rarely expressed such things). What is going on here? he thought. Oh no... Jagger didn't tell them about what I said to him, did he? The last thing he wanted was for Jagger to go around mentioning that they were 'engaged' to be mates. Koschei had only done that to make Jagger happy.
Gage stood at attention when Koschei came over at Jagger's calls. He was actually interested to see how this would play out. Jagger was making a gamble if he was telling a lie. What if he's not lying, though? he thought. Would Koschei actually be mates with Captain Jagger? I thought that they were close, but I didn't know that they were that close. He squirmed, trying not to laugh at the whole concept.
Amelia seemed so confident in the fact that Captain Jagger was just making things up for attention again. Captain Jagger seemed equally as confident in the fact that the whole thing was true. "Sovereign Koschei," Gage meowed in acknowledgement. He dipped his head.
This is going to be good. Captain Amelia looked back as Koschei approached, anticipating the kind of remarks that their Sovereign leader would have in store for Captain Jagger. Their long time rivalry might be satisfied if Jagger had to suffer public humiliation for having the audacity to call himself the mate of the leader of all the Raiders.
"Greetings, our Sovereign," she meowed. "We're sorry Jagger's bothering you like this. He just has something he wants to prove to all of us." With a sneer she looked up at the proud calico, just waiting for him to get completely torn down by whatever Koschei had to say.
Kennedy was still meowing with laughter, holding his paws against his chest as he rolled around. Koschei's arrival had only made the deal sweeter. He couldn't wait to see Jagger being taken down a notch or to for his arrogance. His emerald eyes were glittering with amusement. He finally managed to catch his breath and stand up to dip his head at the leader. //"Greetings, Sovereign,"// he meowed. //"Wait until you hear this."//
Jagger's eyes were alight when Koschei walked towards them. All the adoration he felt for the Sovereign was shown on his face. He sneered at the others as though they were insolent unbelievers in what he had to say. His teeth flashed white in a grin of superiority.
"Koschei," he meowed happily. "Please do tell these fools that you love me very much, we're mates and that makes me more important to you than everyone else." He didn't realize that what he said could result in his death if it enraged the Sovereign enough.
He didn't even know that the Sovereign had been lying to him when he said that they were together.
Koschei stared. His pelt began to prickle with fury and embarrassment. He looked around at all the other cats and then back to Jagger. He unsheathed his reinforced claws and smacked the calico tom from the ear down his muzzle to the other side of his face, ruining his handsome face with bloody scratches. "Ignorant tom, how dare you try to claim my affection?" he growled. "I love no one."
He instantly felt bad for clawing the cat who was one of his most trusted Raiders, and maybe one of his closest friends. It was mostly his fault for lying to Jagger to begin with, but now the calico had taken it too far. He couldn't risk seeming like he had emotions for any cat, playing favorites could result in rebellion or worse. "Don't bother me again," he finished, turning around to leave.
Gage's ears pricked as he listened to the exchange. He didn't know whether to feel sorry for Jagger as he was mercilessly rejected or not. The tom was far too proud anyway. Maybe he needed someone to cut him down before his ego got too out of control. Still he saw the look in the calico's eyes that said that he was on the verge of a mental breakdown. "That's just too bad, Jagger," he meowed. He didn't know what else he could say.
No cat's words could probably make the calico tom feel better.
Amelia was so close to breaking her somber tone and cracking a smile or even a laugh over the misfortune of the calico tom. She only just managed to keep her mouth closed, not wanting to display any kind of emotion. "Isn't that just a shame, Captain Jagger?" she meowed. "I'll bet that just stings you right down in the heart." Her eyes turned to Koschei. He'd given the exact reaction she'd expected.
She had to wonder though if he really had said something to Jagger about it, leading the calico to believe he was more important than all the rest. At least now Jagger was cut down a notch.
