Her black pelt hid her well against the ground where the snow didn't dare touch it. One paw in front of the other the small she-cat stepped lightly towards the scent. Mouse flooded her nose. Leaf-bare was hard, when frogs were more difficult to find the many places for fishing lay frozen out of reach. The small creature shuffled out of some dead leaves. Lowering herself, Nighteye waited. Suddenly she burst forward sending it flying with an outstretched claw. Quickly she clamped onto its neck to kill it. Nighteye dug away at the ground to bury her catch for later. The mouse was small and thin but it would do.
Turning she black she-cat padded up, stopping to turn her gaze to the tunnels. She had been her before as an apprentice, and tried to get her as a nosy kit. Her dark blue eyes peered through the cutting darkness as she drew herself closer to it. She heard once that even a tunnel could take her as far as Northclan!
"Those cold hearted cats are no good" She mewed to herself quietly. Her tail swayed behind her as she took a few weary steps inside. Nighteye could scent other cats that had been here before, but their scents seemed cold and stale now. Nighteye sat and curled her tail around her paws staring into the tunnels. "I wonder what the other clans are doing now?" She meowed a little louder.

Fleetfoot didn't particularly like the Tunnelplace, if only because she'd been attacked by a fox there when she was an apprentice, out trying to coax her troublemaker sister Viperstrike into going home. However she had gone up today to see if she could do her proud duty as a warrior by driving the creature away, making the tunnels safer for WestClan. She usually didn't like to undertake such tasks by herself, but all the other WestClan cats seemed scattered and busy.
She caught the fresh scent of another WestClan cat. Maybe I'll have some help after all, she thought. She saw a dark figure lingering in the entrance of the tunnels. "Hello?" she meowed. She could tell it was another warrior because of the WestClan scent, but she couldn't identify exactly who it was.

"Hello?"
Nighteye spun around and peered through her blue eyes to the entrance of the tunnel, her thoughts pulled from her mind. Her pelt bristled and she jumped to her paws to face the unknown cat. Meeting eyes with the she-cat, Nighteye allowed her fur to flatten.
"Hello Fleetfoot!" she greeted padded out of the darkened tunnel. She blinked her eyes an apology to her clan mate. "You startled me! What are you doing out here?" Nighteye inquired as she let her head tilt slightly to the side.
I didn't even scent her! She realized and started to feel a little hot under her black fur even though the leaf-bare air still crept around them. Nighteye gave silent thanks to starclan that it wasn't an enemy warrior or another cat. The warrior code was falling apart and didn't mean much to many cats now. Every cat from kit to elder had to be on there paws.

Fleetfoot was somewhat surprised that Nighteye didn't sense her coming, but she was glad to know who was there finally. She dipped her head. "I was just going out here to try to clear the tunnels of a fox," she meowed. "When I was an apprentice, my sister and I were nearly killed by it. Do you want to help me?" She hoped that the other WestClan cat would take her up on her venture.
She looked inside, half expecting to see glowing amber eyes that would signal only danger. It was bad for the clan to just let a fox stay in the territories. It could decide that it wanted cats as a tasty snack sometime.

"A fox?" Nighteye echoed as she listened to Fleetfoot speak. Nighteye's blue eyes lit up with enthusiasm to help her clan more than just catching some fresh kill. Her mind wondered back to mouse she had buried earlier. Catch some prey and help chase off a fox?
"Of course I will help!" she meowed. Foxes were a danger to not only kits but even warriors if they were in a foul mood. "Where did you last scent it?" She asked starting to scent the air. Nighteye loved playing with the kits and shuddered at the thought of losing one of the most precious members of Westclan.

Fleetfoot looked down inside the caverns. She could still catch the slightest trace of the fox's scent, which meant it must have been here recently. It had been a little while since she had visited as an apprentice. "It was far down inside there tunnels," she meowed. "It chased Viperstrike and I out, and we thought for sure we were going to be fox food." The brown tabby and white she-cat turned back to her new hunting companion.
"We should go down inside there," she meowed. "I'll bet it's hiding for the winter, and it probably uses more than just this tunnel to get in and out." She wondered for a moment if the fox had cubs. If it did, they would have to get rid of those, too. It would also mean that the fox would be more vicious.

Nighteye stepped carefully back into the tunnel, taking a few steps farther in. Foxes were a threat, but two warriors should surly be able to take on a fox? Her deep blue eyes widened to let in more light as she peering down the long tunnel scenting as she stepped forward.
"Maybe if we're lucky," She meowed swinging her small neat head back to her clanmate, "It will have moved on through here all the way to Northclan!" Northclan could deal with it then, with their could hearts it shouldn't be a problem! She thought to herself as she turned to scent the air once more. The cold stung her throat as she took it in. The fox scent was long faded, but still present. It was possible it could still be here, just farther down.
The thought of helping her clan made Nighteye raise her tail. Nighteye flicked her ear to signal for Fleetfoot to join her. She had never explored more than a few fox-lengths of these tunnels and she allowed her mind to wonder what other surprises the tunnels would bring.

Fleetfoot padded alongside of Nighteye, beginning to venture down inside the tunnels. Bit by bit the scent of fox was growing more strong, which meant that it had been here at some point recently. She flicked her ears. She was confident that the both of them could chase away the fox, but she knew that they would have to be cautious. A mother vixen looking after her cubs could be a vicious creature.
The tunnels started to branch off, and she looked back and forth. "Which way do you think we should go?" she asked, turning her head so that she could see Nighteye. There was very little light left in the tunnels at this point, but she used as much as she could to see the other cat with. It was difficult because of Nighteye's dark color, though.

Nighteye turned to meet her eyes with her fellow warrior, though she had a bit of trouble as well making out exactly where her clan mate stood. Nighteye padded to the start of one of the divided tunnels and lifted her nose to pull in the dark musky scents. Turning she stepped forward and did the same to the next tunnel.
"Here" She meowed pointed with her tail though she couldn't be sure Fleetfoot could see her. "The scent is fresher in this one, don't you agree?" Their loss of sight would be a problem when they found the fox, but the fox would also share their disadvantage. Atleast, Nighteye thought, with my dark pelt I'll blend in easier. Fleetfoot shouldn't have much of a problem either
This would be a battle they would have to fight with their other senses. Nighteye swung back her tail to touch Fleetfoot's shoulder so the she-cat would know where she was.

Though Fleetfoot could only vaguely see Nighteye through the darkness, she understood where the other warrior had suggested they go. She lifted her muzzle and took in a deep breathing, and all the scents. The smell of fox was much stronger down the tunnel Nighteye had pointed out. She nodded. "We'll go down that one, then," she meowed.
She carefully padded into the darkness, knowing that water sometimes gathered in large and dark pools. There was also a chance for large dips in the ground, and if they didn't watch out they could slip and fall into one. "Be careful," she warned. "There are holes and deep water down here."

As she spoke Nighteye felt a thing layer of water dampen her paws. She gave a mew to say she heard and understood what Fleetfoot said. Nighteye risked falling and drowning with every paw step she took but kept going. Her ears were pricked forward and her nose lifted to take in anything that could tell them about their location or where the fox was.
"The scent does seem to be getting stronger" She meowed quietly. Her voice cut the darkness which was otherwise only broken by dripping water and the paw steps of the two cats. The scent of fox was growing, easy to pick out from the stuffy air of the tunnel. Nighteye felt her pelt brush against the tunnel walls every so often, warning her it was turning in one direction or the other.

Fleetfoot listened as Nighteye's voice echoed. The scent of fox was certainly getting stronger, and she knew that they must be nearing the den. She narrowed her eyes. They would have to approach with caution so that the fox did not catch them off guard in the darkness. As cats they had excellent night vision, but there was barely any light to use to enhance it.
She saw a sudden glint of amber eyes in the distance and froze. The smell of fox was incredibly strong now. "I think I can see it," she meowed in a low whisper. Her entire body was tense, and her fur had begun to bristle.

Nighteye widened her eyes as far as she was able to try to spot the fox. Fleetfoot was right, she could make out its outline shifting in front of them, and eyes that almost seemed to glow faced the two cats.
Nighteye let out a hiss as she unsheathed her claws. The fox's hot breath reached her showing just how close they really were. We almost walked right on top of it! She realized. Nighteye hissed and pelted forward catching what she thought to be the fox's muzzle with her claws. She heard it yelp and before she could move back the creature had fastened its teeth around her back leg.
Nighteye yowled and turned to rake her claws across it's face again, forcing it to release her. Her leg felt numb and she could feel the sticky blood staining her fur. She touched it to the ground and felt pain fill her leg overwhelming the numbness, but it wasn't terribly damaged and would be alight. She turned her attention back to the fox and prepared for another attack.

Fleetfoot was startled as the attack began. The fox grabbed onto Nighteye and Fleetfoot let out a hiss. "Let her go!" she yowled with fury. She was relieved when Nighteye was able to escape, but her hackles rose and she prepared to fight the now infuriated canine creature. She clawed it on the flank. She hoped that they could drive it out of the tunnels instead of further into them.
The fox's mouth snapped down sharply near her, narrowly missing her. Her heart was pounding. She tried to get behind the fox to force it to leave the tunnels. "Nighteye, are you alright?" she asked. She then swiped at the fox's tail, causing it to turn around and try to go after the two warriors.

"yeah, I'm fine" she grunted through gritted teeth. Her back leg stung like fire but she would manage. Nighteye lept back careful to keep her back leg off the ground as the fox lunged towards them snapping. Nighteye hissed and swipped her claws across his muzzle. Nighteye took a few more steps back, and the fox quickly lunged forward again snapping his sharp white teeth.
"Fleetfoot!" She called though the darkness and the noise, "We can't chase it off in this space, we need to get it out!" Before she could finish, the fox snapped its jaws close to her face and she could feel its hot breath on her fur.
